Hygge (pronounced "hoo-ga") is a Scandinavian word that translates to feeling content, calm, comfortable, and cozy. It evokes "warmth, conviviality, and kinship", as stated in Signe Johansen's book, How to Hygge. (The Nordic Secrets to a Happy Life). Come learn about Hygge from Jan Peterson Hincapie and walk away with ways to incorporate it into your daily life. Always ranked at the top of the world for happiness and quality of life, Scandinavians consider this a vital component of self-care, rather than a luxury. Hygge encapsulates everything wonderful about Nordic living. Experience greater joy and contentment by creating Hygge in your life! Please note this event has been moved from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, January 17th.

About the speaker: Jan Peterson Hincapie, a native of Rockford, a former member of Salem Lutheran, and a product of the Rockford Park District, has spent 42 years in the parks and recreation industry. With Swedish roots on both her father and mother’s side, Jan has taken an interest in learning more about her ancestry and the Scandinavian culture. Jan visited Sweden for the first time in 2023, and learned about Lagom and Hygge, two Scandinavian trends that have become popular in the US. She gathered information about how to incorporate these valuable philosophies into our lives and is ready to share her research. Jan has spoken from coast to coast at over a dozen parks and recreation and community education conferences, as well as the National Recreation and Parks Conference and the Athletic Business Conference. She has done training for Wintrust Bank, school districts, municipalities, and libraries, and has served as keynote speaker for the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. Jan returns to SHS after her presentation on Lagom in April of 2024.
