Borgholm, Öland, Sweden: Rockford's Newest Sister City

Tourism czar Wendy Perks Fisher was instrumental in establishing a sister cityhood with the island community of Borgholm, Öland.

Fisher traveled with assistant John Groh to witness Borgholm's chief executive (Anita Lönegård) sign an agreement endorsed by Rockford Mayor Doug Scott. Swedish officials were in Rockford August 3, 2002 to obtain Scott's autograph on a second original copy of the friendship pact.

Fisher described Borgholm as a summer resort of 11,000 that swells to 200,000 and counts among its part-time residents many artists and the Swedish royal family, who keeps a vacation home there.

Efforts by the Rockford tourism bureau to form such a relationship floundered for 10 years, Fisher said, until Dennis Johnson (hc johnson press) got involved. Johnson went to Borgholm to promote the signing as part of Rockford festivities to mark 150 years of Swedish immigration.
